Being baby safe3.11.2009

Nicole Richie

Since I’ve become a mother, I have become friends with more moms. We often share important parenting knowledge. One bit of information that has truly resonated with me is the danger of certain plastics.

Many mothers heat up bottles in the microwave to give babies milk, but did you know that heat enables the release of toxic chemicals in certain plastics? (Here’s a Time article that explores the issue. I’m not trying to be a guru, but I encourage you to read about it and decide for yourself!)

Not to give plastic a bad name at all… There are safe plastics made by brands including Born Free and Dr. Brown’s.

I’ve been dubbed the ‘overly protective’ mother in the house… I tend to keep Harlow away from plastic toys. Joel will indulge her from time to time… He figures if it didn’t hurt him growing up, it’s fine. And I completely respect his parenting style.

Alternatives to plastics aren’t as hard to find as you might think. There are these great wooden toys by Haba that she likes to play with. And Harlow loves to play with anything that makes noise — wooden rattles and instruments. Think it’s hereditary? ;)

  1. I love Born Free and thier venting system. Both of my babies spit up less and good-bye to gas. It was also helpful to my 19 month who had acid reflux.

  2. I’m also very cautious about the baby bottles in the microwave (my baby girl is 3 weeks older than Harlow, btw ;)
So, I just warm the milk in a glass and then mix it with the cereals in a baby bottle! It works just fine :)
    Take care

  3. I’m an aunt since i’e 5 years and my sisters had always this problem, with bottles and toys. Here, in France, doctors recommend to use a bottles glass which are covered with silicone to protect from the burn and breakage. I don’t know if it’s the best for a babies but it’s interesting.
Wooden toys it’s a good ideas and for a babies, it’s more interesting :D
I think it’s nice to talk about your daughter and your problems as parents on your site! xx

  4. I used graco glass bottles and they were awesome. They make 4oz and 8oz bottles. Very easy to clean and better than plastic. :-)

  5. It’s true, this is super important. Yes, we all grew up on all the plastics and whatnot, but it doesn’t mean we have to expose our kids to it now — especially knowing how dangerous it all can be!

I am faithful to Born Free bottles and buy them for my son. I also buy him tons of Haba toys! Anyone who’s interested in great, cheap, quality name brand baby stuff should check out kidsurplus.com. That’s where I get all the things I need for my baby :)

I love your entries, Nicole — great pearls of wisdom!

  7. Hi,
I didn’t know that! My boys are almost 2 and 4 now, so they don’t drink from a bottle anymore. And there is nothing wrong with being ‘overly protective’. My husband tells me the same all the time! I just want my boys to be sound and safe. Take care!

  10. I don’t believe there is such a thing as being over-protective of your baby. When my son was an infant, I was so stressed about the whole bottle in the microwave issue that I actually outlawed in. I made my ex-husband and myself use a bottle warmer or the old fashioned, hot water in a pot on the stove.

I never heard of the plastic being toxic thing. I had just always heard that it can cause differential heating in the milk and could possibly scald the baby’s mouth.

Thank you for posting this. It’s nice to see someone who cares enough to pass on their knowledge.

  11. OMG i never knew that! thanks nicole i wont be using plastic bottles anymore! Harlows lucky to have such a great mummy.xoxo
    LOVE ur style too!!!

  12. I know this might seem a little random, but I can’t tell you how much you inspire me to be more conscious of other people. I also feel like I have a teeny tiny connection to you (kind of) because I knew Sarah when she lived in Northern VA :D

  13. I have a 6 month old girl Anastasia. Everyone says i am overprotective but you know what i tell them “It only takes that one time” I feel as a mom you should research everything. I feed my angel with Dr browns and i recommend them to every mommy that asks me :)

  14. I agree with you, so I prefer to use glass bottles :)

  15. You are such a great mommy. I love you girl!

    love,
    jessica

  16. I am pregnant with my first child and am due in November. I have been looking for good places to shop for natural baby products and I just found a great website for anyone in the same boat…it is called Wildflower Diapers. They have everything from cloth diapers with several options of covers all the way to wooden toys. Hope this is helpful!
