I have to say, I love Miami! Never has work been this much fun. This morning I was on the Regis & Kelly Show promoting my jewelry line. They are in Miami this week shooting at the pool of the Fontainebleau Resort. I managed to appear on their show, and get a tan at the same time!

I had the afternoon off & spent the rest of the day with my family just relaxing by the pool and then we had an early dinner out. It’s 90 degrees here and beautiful!

Tomorrow I’ll be doing a signing for my jewelry line and hopefully, if you live here in Miami, I’ll see you :)

Every child deserves the best3.19.2009

Joel and I always say we feel so blessed to live the life we live. We also realize that Harlow is blessed to get to live a life about one percent of all the children in the world get to live.

We think it’s so important that every child has the opportunity to experience the absolute best in health care and education. And that’s why we started Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.

We got to thinking about all of these issues when I was pregnant with Harlow, when we launched the foundation.

Joel travels all over the world, including Africa, for the organization. For the past two years, I have been either pregnant or breastfeeding, so I tend to stay closer to home. However, I did take a magical and moving trip to Moscow, Russia, about which I will write more soon!

Whenever we decide on a new project or endeavor, Joel and I pick the things that are closest to our hearts.

Keep checking back here to stay updated on how we are helping children all over the world and how you can get involved!

Being baby safe3.11.2009

Nicole Richie

Since I’ve become a mother, I have become friends with more moms. We often share important parenting knowledge. One bit of information that has truly resonated with me is the danger of certain plastics.

Many mothers heat up bottles in the microwave to give babies milk, but did you know that heat enables the release of toxic chemicals in certain plastics? (Here’s a Time article that explores the issue. I’m not trying to be a guru, but I encourage you to read about it and decide for yourself!)

Not to give plastic a bad name at all… There are safe plastics made by brands including Born Free and Dr. Brown’s.

I’ve been dubbed the ‘overly protective’ mother in the house… I tend to keep Harlow away from plastic toys. Joel will indulge her from time to time… He figures if it didn’t hurt him growing up, it’s fine. And I completely respect his parenting style.

Alternatives to plastics aren’t as hard to find as you might think. There are these great wooden toys by Haba that she likes to play with. And Harlow loves to play with anything that makes noise — wooden rattles and instruments. Think it’s hereditary? ;)

The Little Seed

soleil-moon-fryeSoleil Moon Frye (remember her from Punky Brewster?) has this lovely store in Larchmont Village in Los Angeles called The Little Seed.

I find myself going there often because—even beyond the fact that all of their baby products are eco-friendly and  organic—I’m confident their items are safe for Harlow.

Soleil, who is a mom, too, has done a ton of research on finding non-toxic baby products. This is what inspired her store, actually.

Knowing that she has done her homework is part of what keeps me coming back!
